Attention All Club Members:
At the last meeting, I mentioned Scout events at SciWorks for Tiger, Cub, and Webelo scouts. The dates are March 1, 8, and 15. Activities will run from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM, but there will not be continuous activities for the whole four hours (you will have some down time). Also, participants are entitled to FREE PIZZA!
I need presenters for a workshop that will cover the following items. The workshop is 30 minutes long and will take place at 8:45 PM and 9:45 PM on March 1 (I don’t yet know the times for March 8 and 15).
Set up and demonstrate how to focus a simple telescope or binoculars, and use a diagram of a telescope to explain how it works. I will provide two SciWorks telescopes (a Newtonian and a Schmidt-Cassegrain) for hands-on demonstration, and club members can bring their own as well. I believe the objective is to show how light enters the telescope and what happens before it reaches the eyepiece. I have some handouts that show cutaway views of different types of telescopes and the path light travels through the different types. Club members can bring any diagrams, posters, or models they may have.
Interview an astronomer. This is a question and answer session with the scouts asking questions to the club members.
Learn about careers that relate to astronomy. I will have a list of some astronomy careers, and club members can talk about other astronomy careers that I have overlooked. This will probably be a part of the question and answer session.
There will be other astronomy workshops in the museum that the scouts will attend to complete the requirements for their badges and pins.
If the weather is clear, we would like to have telescopes outside from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
