Steve Childers will present September’s FAS program titled, “Where is Everybody? Updating the Drake Equation and the Fermi Paradox.”
In 1961, the radio astronomer Dr. Frank Drake formulated an equation to estimate the number of intelligent alien civilizations that could communicate with us. Our galaxy is so big, that number could easily be over a million. But the nuclear physicist Dr. Enrico Fermi asked, “If there are so many intelligent civilizations out there, why haven’t they communicated with us already?” This presentation will look at recent evidence from astronomy, biology, and physics to summarize current theories for the existence (or lack thereof) of interstellar civilizations.
You don’t have to be a member to attend. If you’re curious and have an interest in space and astronomy, come on out!
The program starts at 7:30 pm. The Society’s business meeting will take place after the program. The meeting will also be available on WebEx for FAS members.
