September 2023 Meeting – Wednesday September 13

Please join us for the September 13, 2023 meeting of the Forsyth Astronomical Society. The meeting will be held at Kaleideum North (formerly SciWorks), 400 West Hanes Mill Road, Winston-Salem, NC.

You don’t have to be a member to attend. If you’re curious and have an interest in astronomy and the universe, come on out!

The program starts at 7:30 pm. The Society’s business meeting will take place after the program.

“Hawaiian Astronomy: The observatories on Mauna Kea and their Polynesian ancestors” will be presented by FAS member Steve Childers. The observatories at the summit of Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii are among the most important astronomical resources on Earth. But they were preceded by centuries-old traditions of ancient Polynesians, who used their encyclopedic knowledge of the night sky to become the finest navigators the world has ever known. This program will explore how these people accomplished their incredible feats of navigation, and why Mauna Kea was chosen as the site for the world’s most important telescopes.
