The Forsyth Astronomical Society Needs You…

With the opening of Kaleideum at its new downtown location, we have lost our primary urban observing site. Kaleideum North (formerly SciWorks) is no longer available, and the downtown location, with its tall buildings and intense light pollution, is less than optimum for nighttime astronomical viewing.

We’re asking the public for possible locations for our periodic evening observations. We will still be be hosting events atop Pilot Mountain and at Stone Mountain as in the past. However, we are searching for other locations within our service area with reasonable dark skies and an unobscured views. The ideal observing site would have minimal light intrusion from surrounding businesses, homes, advertising or street lights. Our events typically garner 50-200 visitors, so ample parking is a must. Onsite restroom facilities would be greatly appreciated as well.

If you’re an organization, business, park, or municipality who would like to host the FAS for one or more public evening observation events throughout the year, or if you have a general suggestion of a possible event site, please use our Contact Us page to let us know. Our site vetting committee will be in touch to assess its viability for usability.

If you have attended any of our observation events in the past you know they’re “Out Of This World.” Help the FAS continue its long tradition of astronomical outreach in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth/Stokes/Surry/Yadkin area.

P.S. If you have a location where we could hold our monthly meetings, we would be interested as well. We currently meet at the new downtown Kaleideum, but, with limited parking, this location is not the most conducive for all our members.
